Where to Stay in Edinburgh on a Budget

What are some of the top things you consider when choosing a place to stay for an upcoming travel?

For us, the location is of prime importance given that we’re pretty much dependent on public transport for getting around.

That, and the budget of course. Throw in a comfortable bed, clean surroundings, a pleasing decor – and you’ve practically won our hearts. And that’s exactly what the Haymarket Hub Hotel in Edinburgh managed to do. In fact, they went a step ahead and wowed us! Read on for my comprehensive review of our stay at the Haymarket Hub Hotel.

Why We Chose the Haymarket Hub Hotel in Edinburgh

Truth be told, the UK isn’t one of the cheapest places to travel to. Budget accommodations in Edinburgh are likely to cost as much as mid-range hotels in many parts of Europe. However, we certainly didn’t want to compromise on the location. If you’re used to taking the public transport to explore a place, you’ll know how important the location is.

As we were slowly running out of options, we chanced upon Haymarket Hub – situated centrally, opposite the Haymarket train station in Edinburgh. The hotel had a 8/10 rating on Booking.com with almost 3000 reviews. They mentioned how easily you could access the major Edinburgh attractions from here. And just like that, we were sold.

Our First Impression of the Haymarket Hub Hotel

When a hotel claims to be “centrally located” or “a minute away from the train station”, we usually take it with a pinch of salt. Many a time, they don’t turn out to be exactly as advertised.

So, even though Haymarket Hub was supposed to be right opposite the Haymarket train station – in all honesty, I did expect a bit of a walk to get there.

As luck would have it, our travel to Edinburgh from Swansea turned out to be all sorts of crazy. We had booked our train tickets months in advance. However, on that particular morning, we came to know that our train had been canceled due to some ongoing repairs. So, they put us on an alternate route: Swansea – London, London – Bristol, Bristol – Manchester, and finally Manchester – Edinburgh.

By the time we reached Edinburgh, we were dead tired. I was dreading the walk to the hotel upon exiting the Haymarket station when suddenly, I see it right there – exactly opposite the train station like they had said!

I, on the other hand, was obsessing over the glass, refillable water bottle they had provided. Let’s face it, drinking out of a glass bottle is so much more refreshing than a plastic one. And, eco-friendly too! It was just what I needed after a long, tiring day.

Final Thoughts

The Haymarket Hub also offers a 24-hour front desk where you can get snacks or coffee at any hour. Most importantly, the hotel is close to every major Edinburgh attraction – we spent very little time commuting and had so much more for exploration.

This looks like it was a great hotel! I visited Edinburgh back in 2014 and stayed at the Kickass Hostel which was another great accommodation for budget travellers but not nearly as nice as this hotel!

I absolutely loved Edinburgh. We stayed in an Airbnb room which was really cool but this hotel seems very nice too.
