What To Wear In Paris: Dress Like A Local

Knowing what to wear in Paris is crucial if you’re planning a trip to the French capital. Because, in Paris, “go as you like” is likely to be an epic failure when it comes to dressing up.

Mademoiselle Coco Chanel once said, “Dress shabbily and they remember the dress; dress impeccably and they remember the woman.”

Why Is The Art Of Dressing So Important?

Parisians like it if you can blend in, pick up a few French phrases and act like a local. It’s bound to get you better treatment everywhere you go. Sounds weird? I know it does. It is, however, a well-known fact that if you don’t dress like a local in Paris, even waiters at cafes or restaurants will treat you indifferently.

What To Wear In Paris

For Parisians, fashion and style are intrinsic to their culture. Hence you need to invest some time in choosing what to wear in Paris.

The good news is that it’s not too complicated. There are just a few basic rules to keep in mind to prevent yourself from standing out as a tourist.

  • Stick to neutral colors – you can never go wrong with black, white, beige or grey.

  • Make sure not to have more than 3 colors in your entire ensemble (including your accessories).

  • Avoid loud colors but you can get a little cheeky and team up a colorful jacket or scarf with an otherwise neutral ensemble.

  • When in doubt, go all black. It never fails.
  • Layering is important given the frequent weather changes from sunny to rainy or chilly.

  • Avoid heels. It’s rare to find a Parisian woman wearing heels on the roads. A good, comfortable pair of sneakers will be your best friend on those cobbled roads. Check out some more options for the best travel shoes here
  • Strictly, no shorts!

Don’t forget to have fun mixing and matching your outfits. A clever way of doing this is, by using various different colored scarves with the same pants, jacket or sweater. Also, try and stick to solids as much as possible. If not, you can wear polka dots or maybe a checked scarf.
